Flipboard
Flipboard is a pioneering mobile application that transforms news, articles, and social feeds into an interactive digital magazine. The platform introduced a new way of reading online content, combining the elegance of editorial design with the fluidity of a touch-based interface.
For this project, I assisted Brice Delarue in developing custom editorial layouts for Flipboard Partners, creating a flexible design system tailored for tablet reading.
Editorial Design
The project focused on designing digital magazine layouts that translate traditional editorial principles into a mobile environment.
Using modular grids and carefully structured compositions, the layouts were designed to ensure clarity, rhythm, and strong visual hierarchy across different types of content.
Particular attention was given to typographic balance, image placement, and reading flow, allowing articles to remain visually engaging while maintaining excellent readability on tablet devices.
Visual System
The layout system was built around a flexible grid structure, allowing different publishers to adapt their editorial identity while maintaining consistency within the Flipboard ecosystem.
Key design elements included:
modular layout components • clear typographic hierarchy • responsive typography for different screen sizes • optimized image formats for digital reading • editorial compositions designed for touch navigation.
This system enabled content to feel both magazine-like and native to digital interfaces.
Applications
The layouts were used by a wide range of international media partners, allowing them to publish content in a format specifically designed for Flipboard’s reading experience.
Selected partners include:
Architectural Digest, Ars Technica, BuzzFeed, CBS News, Chicago Tribune, CNET, CNN, Condé Nast, Elle, Fast Company, Financial Times, GQ, Inc., Mashable, The New Yorker, Paris Match, Quartz, Rolex, Time Magazine, Vice Magazine, Vogue, Vox Media, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post.
Solution
The project helped establish a modern editorial language for digital magazines, combining the sophistication of print design with the ergonomics of mobile interfaces.
By integrating modular layouts, responsive typography, and clear visual hierarchy, the system created a fluid, immersive, and highly readable digital publication experience.
